Front Cover Development

Here is the development process for my magazine, I will put all of my ideas here and reflect on the decisions that I make.

Genre: Automobile
Subgenre: Cars

Name of magazine

  • Turbocharged
  • Cruise Culture
  • Revved up
  • Torque Talk
  • Cruise Control
  • Sixth Gear (6th Gear)
I decided in the title "Sixth Gear" for my magazine as it is a common term related to cars. The sixth gear would normally be the fastest speed of a car.

Possible cover lines
  • Behind the Wheel: Test-driving latest models
  • Worth the Hype?: A closer look on [car brand]
  • Hot Wheels: Toy cars into real cars
  • Budget-friendly 4 wheelers: cheap cars for your next adventure!
  • Racing Legends: celebrating drivers and cars
  • Unveiling the Future: Hottest cars to arrive in later years
  • Exotic Elegance: Rare and exotic cars you should know about!
  • Titan Engines: Most powerful car builds ever made.
Main Coverlines
  • Worth the Hype?: A closer look on [car brand]
  • Behind the Wheel: Test-driving latest models
Images
  • Cars
  • backgrounds (streets, outdoor car tracks, highways)
  • people on cars
  • wheels
  • engines
  • car logos
  • callipers
  • toolbenches
  • garages
  • roads/streets/outdoors/highways (backgrounds)
Main Cover
  • A car with a mall in the background
    • The choice of background for the main cover gives off high end, fancy car vibes, as most the cars I'm having in the magazine would be expensive sports cars.

Statement of Intent

Here is my statement of intent

Genre

Automobile

I have always had an interest in cars, and I thought it’d be an interesting and fun idea for me to create a magazine about cars and the numerous types of cars.

Primary Target Audience

Age: 15-25

Race: Any

Gender: All

I plan to make my magazine more of a fun guide to cars rather than the usual car magazine that would just show the car and some info about it. For that reason, I decided to target this towards younger people, as the style would be more fun and colorful.

Personality: Car enthusiasts

Lifestyle: people who work with cars, car collectors

Interests: Cars

The magazine will be heavily talking about cars and showing off its different builds, abilities and sizes. I think that car enthusiasts would enjoy this as they would have prior understanding of cars and would enjoy looking through the different versions of cars that would be shown in the magazine.

Secondary  Target Audience

For all genders

I want to make sure the magazine is inclusive to everyone, as cars are usually seen as a male-dominated territory, and I want to also emphasise that cars can be for everyone to enjoy, regardless of what your gender identity is.

Content Overview

I plan for the magazine content to show different types of cars, different car meet locations and a few rare, limited cars.

Unique Selling Point

Representations

The magazine is going to show different types of cars, whether it be it’s build, speed or size. I want to represent the different countries and companies that make all sorts of cars.

Magazine Research

Here is the research for my magazine.

Big Details

Classic Mercedes
Overview
This magazine features the car brand Mercedes and it includes all the models and values of the old fashion Mercedes cars. This magazine was released autumn of 2023.

Analysis
The Typography of the magazine is, in my opinion, all over the place, as the cover lines are too big and bold it sort of buries the masthead and it's abit difficult to recognise which one is the main coverline, and maybe to a few it would also take awhile to figure out which is the actual masthead/title of the magazine. The main picture is pretty clear, it's big and dominant.

Representation
The cars shown in this magazine are all old fashioned Mercedes cars. The main cover image has a plain background, as the main thing the magazine is trying to put focus on is the car and it's looks/style, and not it's usability (context: an outdoor background would hint the car is great for the outdoors, a street/highway background would hint the car is great for everyday use on cement roads/on highways).

The type of cars shown is represented as the old fashioned style cars that are all for looks or for a collection type item, and not it's actual practical use. Car lovers often find, buy, and collect these types of cars to show off the looks and style.

Audience
The target audience for car magazines are often car enthusiasts who enjoy admiring cars, whether it be through buying and collecting, going to car meets or just simply through pictures and videos in media. This Classic Mercedes magazine is heavily targetted to old fashion Mercedes car lovers, as the front cover is covered in popular, but old, models of Mercedes. The magazine even mentions a car model that belongs to James Hunt, a late british f1 driver who won the world championships at 1976.

What inspires you
I like the double page spread for the magazines "All about space" and "Vogue" as I plan to make double pages similar to it, with cars itself being in th background with it's designated background (e.g a truck in an outdoor environment, and a sports car in a high end street environment). I use these as a reference as to how to make my double page spreads as I had no prior knowledge on how to actually make one, nor did I have a plan for it.

What do you dislike
The contents page for the magazine "The Time Place" is one of the few examples I really do not like, I'm using it as an example and reminder of what not to do. The pictures in the contents page look like it's pasted randomly and none of them connect well with the other,

Relevance
Other than the pages from the pictures of the magazines above that I dislike, I'm using the majority of it as a reference for my own magazine. I want to make the page formats similar to that of "Lionmag" and "All about space", as I really like the way the texts are accompanied with pictures. Especially the double page spread from the magazine "All about space" where the telescopes are lined up on the top and the text lined up under each one, I plan to use that as a reference except with cars and not telescopes.

Week 1
- Our teacher introduced us to the magazine brief and so far it is really interesting
- we learned terminologies and keywords to identify all the parts and features of a magazine
- using the terminologies we had learnt, we labelled the front page of our magazine with said terminologies

Week 2
- I started looking at other types of car magazines from friends and seatmates. I analysed other ways magazines could be designed and learnt from that.
- We went over representation theory and I could input a few things I learnt from it to my magazine project

Week 3:
- analysed two front covers in detail
- started on the less detailed analysis on 4 other magazines
problems: had too little examples of magazines irl so not so much to actually research on
solution: a picture of all the magazines from all the students in the class will be uploaded to a shared google slides.

Week 4:
- our teacher set us up with a new post to plan out our magazine in more detail
- throughout the week we did genre theory and mostly just magazine progress
problems: im still struggling on a title and coverlines for the magazine as i am very indecisive
solution: i chose the one that sounds best

Week 5
- we did media theories and a gallery walk activity with the class, presenting the multiple theories we've done
- our teacher instructed us to do a research and development on our double pages in a magazine
problems: the statement of intent format is still not enlarged
solutions: our teacher told us of a youtube video on how to fix the format

Week 6
- we did our first attempt on section A, where we fully watched a scene 4 times instead of the usual 2 times.
- we practiced on how to write up a proper section A (in pairs) and how to plan it
problems: ss i still struggled abit on target audiences
solutions: after the section A practice we did, with how every mise-en-scen, sound, edit, and camera work could affect the audience, it helped me realize that it could also be applied to my magazine where every design i do and choices i make could affect how and what audience im targetting

Week 7
- we did checklist to make sure we have everything in the blog set up
- this is the last week im having, going into term break
problems: i have a bunch of blogs where I have to put a reflection on
solutions: i'll be finishing up my blog over the holidays/whenever i have that free time

Semester 2
Week 1
- we started on the location scout and the risk assesment for it
- went through the feedback that our teacher gave us individually about our project scores from last term
problems: the blog title (whilst editing) stayed as a black box instead of the title that it should be set as
solutions: went through the layout settings and eventually found a way to change it

Week 3
- we started to really focus on magazine development
- i started uploading all my photos and designing drafts of the front cover
problems: could not find a picture i had taken for the front cover months back
solutions: i'll look through my gallery after school

Week 6
- we worked on the contents page and double page this week
- mainly focused on designing them
problems: our class got cut in half because our school was closed in the morning due to a traffic issue
solutions: we do everything we need to at home

Component 1 - Brief

Here is the brief for Component 1. I have decided to choose the magazine option.
