Statement of Intent

This is the statement of intent for my teammate and I's music video

Self reflection:
Both me and Sharon did the statement of intent, we just took turns doing the different sections and when it came down to the different tasks to set to each member, we just took the ones we suited best, or were comfortable doing more. I had the more technical tasks like editing and filming, while Sharon does the theories and more written tasks (as well as taking the lead role in the music video!). In total she has 6 tasks and I have 7, we divided it fairly and we're both happy with how our project is set up.

Research: Industry

This is my research on the industry side of music videos.

What genre am I working in?

For the final project, me and my teammate Sharon are going to make our music vdeo's genre be leaning more to pop. It is a very popular genre amongst younger audiences and I think it'd be a fun genre to play around iwth for our project.

What company would most likely produce my media text in the real world?

the singer Niki produced her song "high school in jakarta", but she signed a record label with 88rising. I think 88rising and Niki would most likely produce my media text into the real world as she focuses more on music that really offer that feeling of nostalgia, young romance, and experiences that come with growing up in an Indonesian school.

Research - My genre

Detailed Research

Name: High school in Jakarta

Year: 2022

Production Company: 88rising

Genre / Sub genre

- Genre: Pop

- sub genre: Indie/Alternative pop

What conventions does it conform to?

This song is about experiences in high school, it has themes such as young romance which are usually found within the genre of pop. It focuses on teen experiences and relatable scenarios to allow for young audience to feel included when listening to the song, as it is also enganging and has a catchy chorus to easily remember.

What conventions does it subvert?

A lot of pop music has an upbeat and feel-good type of vibe, however unlike most high school-themed songs, High school in Jakarta has a slower tone, as it reflects on nostalgia and memories. This song also focuses more on everyday experiences that a teenager would go through in highschool, rather than the stereotypical prom dance and/or sports event trope that a lot of high school music videos show.

What representations are there? (people/places/events)

High school in Jakarta shows the emotions and experiences in a teenage life, it includes the happy moments, as well as the heartbreaks a teen would face from love interests and romance. It also shows the nostalgia that comes with growing up. This song talks about school life in Jakarta, hence the title of the song; It focuses on the specific culture and dynamics that are typically found in high schools in Jakarta, providing a different perspective to those who are unfamiliar with this particular area, as it is also different than the stereotypical western music videos that portray high schools.

Name: deja vu

Year: 2021

Production Company: Geffen records

Genre / Sub genre: Pop / contemporary pop

What conventions does it conform to?

Like in many other contemporary pop music, deja vu conveys a lot of pure emotions that resonate with the listeners' personal experience. The song is a story about experiencing the emotions of jealousy and sadness that comes with finding out an ex-parter moving on with someone new. A lot of the audience can relate to this feeling, and the imagery of Olivia (the singer) looking at the supposed "new person" that the ex-lover has moved onto, enhances the storytelling and further connecting the audience with the song.

What conventions does it subvert?

Contemporary pop music, especially those that narrates around a breakup, usually end in a positive note as it often empowers the audiences to grow and change themselves for the better after a breakup. However, deja vu shows the messy reality of the endings of a relationship, as not everyone has an empowering moment after a painful breakup. The song offers a feeling of unresolved emotions that audiences can relate to when going through the journey of moving on.

What representations are there? (people/places/events)

deja vu includes representations of the female perspective on romantic heartbeaks. It provides the complex emotions that women go through when experiencing love, such as the feeling of missing an ex-lover with someone new, and the emotional pain that comes with jealousy.

General Research

Title: Birds of a feather
Artist: Billie Eilish

Year: 2024

Target audience, and how are they appealed to?

This song is targetted to those with close connections (friends and families) with their loved ones, and it talks about how Billie wants to always be with the people she loves.

What would you like to use in your opening from this?

The camera angles (lots trucking and tracking) that follow along with the subject.

Title: Die with a smile
Artist: Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars

Year: 2024

Target audience, and how are they appealed to?

This song targets a broad audience, as the themes in this song (love and romance) could be felt and related to by younger audiences, but it could also be targeted to older audiences who appreciate the emotional concepts of the song.

Title: From the start
Artist: Laufey

Year: 2023

Target audience, and how are they appealed to?

This song targets younger audiences, specifically 16-18 year old teens. It talks about the emotional distress that comes from experiencing an unrequited love from crushes. One sided crushes and unrequited love can be a common theme within high school students.

What would you like to use in your opening from this?

I would like to use the same way the camera follows laufey around as she sings and tells the story. I like that its narrated and focused around her.

What would you like to avoid in your opening from this?

I would like to avoid that laufey is the only subject in the music video, I'd want more people included and interacted with in the music video.

This is the video our teacher showed us in class, its additional research that I will refer back to when going through the process of making the music video.

Self Reflection:

I was a bit skeptical at first, as going into such a big project with only 2 people is kind of intimidating. However, over the past few weeks in term 1, I realized I just had to relax and just make sure I had fun and actually enjoyed my work instead of constantly dreading and overthinking the workload (which thankfully is cut in half by our teacher as we have half the team members compared to the rest of the class with 3-4 members). Before this project, I was already good friends with Sharon so communication is clear and it isn't awkward for us. Overall, I'm happy with this grouping.

Week 1 & Week 2: I was absent for a few days in both week 1 and 2, therefore I missed a lot of class. However, my classmates were introduced to the music video project for our final project. I was also in class for a few theory lessons and we learned about Curran and Seaton amongst other theorists.

Week 3: We had a photoshoot scheduled for our school yearbook, so a lot of our classes were cut short. We started our research this week for our final project, I am teamed up with Sharon.

Week 4: We started our statement of intent. My teammate and I started discussing about the idea and story of the song, but haven't noted anything down as it was still too general of a plan

Week 5: we started our moodboard with a few pictures from pinterest and started planning out on our lyric sheet.

Week 6: We had one project lesson where I just cleaned up my blog as it wasn't so organized from all the times I was absent and had just been randomly uploading blogs. Then we learned about media environments for our theory lessons
